• A personal note on IGBP and the social sciences

Humans are an integral component of the Earth system as conceptualised by IGBP. João Morais recalls key milestones in IGBP’s engagement with the social sciences and offers some words of advice for Future Earth.
  • IGBP and Earth observation:
    a co-evolution

The iconic images of Earth beamed back by the earliest spacecraft helped to galvanise interest in our planet’s environment. The subsequent evolution and development of satellites for Earth observation has been intricately linked with that of IGBP and other global-change research programmes, write Jack Kaye and Cat Downy .

IGBP @ AGU 2015: update

News |

IGBP will hold its Landmark Synthesis Event at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting in December this year. Preparations for the event are in full swing. Here's a brief update.

IGBP is organising a series of scientific sessions and other activities as part of its Landmark Synthesis Event at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), 14-18 December, 2015. This will provide an occasion to celebrate our scientific and institutional legacy and hand over the baton of global-change research to Future Earth. We look forward to seeing our community, partners and well-wishers later this year.

  • Scientific sessions: IGBP is co-sponsoring almost 100 sessions covering an extraordinarily broad range of topics. Among the highlights are two union sessions as well as integrative sessions on the Southern Ocean and land science.

  • Early-career scientists' workshop(11-12 December): IGBP and Future Earth will hold a workshop for early-career scientists in advance of the AGU meeting (11-12 December) at Stanford University. The workshop, which will bring together early-career scientists from the global South and North, will focus on co-design and co-production of knowledge.

  • Celebration banquet(13 December): This will be held in the evening on 13 December and will bring together past and present community members to reminisce about and celebrate IGBP's achievements.

  • Bella Gaia performance (17 December): IGBP, AGU and Future Earth are sponsoring a music-and-dance performance by the Bella Gaia group based on the theme of global change. This will be followed by a panel discussion involving representatives of the three organisations and moderated by the award-winning journalist Gaia Vince.

IGBP is supporting the attendance of tens of developing-country scientists. Special thanks to the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) for supporting participants from the Asia-Pacific region. Thanks also to NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) for their support.
