BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Shobhakar Dhakal is a researcher with the Urban Environmental Management Project of the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Kitakyushu, Japan. Dr. Dhakal's core interests are policies for sustainable energy systems and their environmental implications. Currently, he is involved in a research project on the integration of energy-related policies in Asian mega-cities with the aim of generating future energy and greenhouse gas scenario and analyses of the policy implications on urban energy and environment. This project is carried out in co-operation with the Industrial Transformation Project of the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP-IT). Apart from energy and environmental studies, he is also carrying out research on urban sustainability and sustainability assessment. Dr. Dhakal is providing research and technical support to the "Kitakyushu Initiative for a Clean Environment", endorsed by the 4th Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in September 2000 and now co-ordinated by United Nations Economic and Social Commissions for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). Dr. Dhakal holds a Ph.D. in Urban Environmental Management from the University of Tokyo, Japan, a Masters degree in Energy Economics and Planning from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand, and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering (power systems) from India. He was also involved in research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge USA, the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, and the University of Hong Kong.
