BIOGRAPHY
Ong Jin Eong obtained his B.Sc. from the University of Melbourne and his Ph.D. from the University of Tasmania. He joined the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in Penang in 1970 as one of the founder members of the School of Biological Sciences. He is presently professor at USM's Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies. Prof. Ong has been working on the mangrove ecosystem for a quarter of a century with a small but active group at USM. The USM mangrove group actively collaborates with scientists in this region as well internationally. The Group's long-term objective is to close the carbon and nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorus) budgets in a mangrove ecosystem. Prof. Ong has served on a number of national, regional and international scientific committees (Malaysian National Scientific Research Development Council, Advisory Panel to SARCS, UN Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspect of Environmental Protection-GESAMP) as well as editorial boards (Malayan Nature Journal, Biotropica & Mangrove & Salt Marshes). He is a life-member of the Malaysian Nature Society was president of the Malaysian Society for Marine Sciences.
