Dr. Gisbert Glaser
Senior Advisor Science for Sustainable Development, International Council for Science (ICSU) BIOGRAPHY Gisbert Glaser has worked on international environmental sciences programmes at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in Paris from 1972 to 2001 when he retired with the rank of Assistant Director-General. During these years his scientific advisory, research planning, science policy and science management activities had a worldwide coverage and included extensive travels to and on all continents. During the last decade of his career at UNESCO his professional responsibilities were focused on strategic policy issues such as bridging the gap between science and policy-making for sustainable development in the context of the follow-up to the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), and developing a new contract between science and society as one of the main concerns of the joint UNESCO/ICSU World Conference on Science (1999). Dr Glaser was appointed Coordinator of Environmental Programmes in UNESCO in January 1993; originally with the rank of Principal Director, since January 1998 with the rank of Assistant Director-General. In this capacity, he was responsible for the overall promotion and coordination of UNESCOâs major interdisciplinary scientific programmes covering the worldâs ecosystems, freshwater resources, oceans and the earthâs crust, as well as educational programmes dedicated to creating environmental awareness and support for sustainable development. He served as Deputy Coordinator from 1989 to 1992. Prior to that, he was a Senior Programme Specialist in UNESCOâs Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme. He was a member of ICSUâs Advisory Committee on the Environment (ACE) from 1992 to 1996. Dr Glaser, of German nationality, holds a doctorate in geography from the University of Heidelberg (1965). He was a professor of geography of natural resources development at Heidelberg University for six years and has done several years of respective field research including one year in Brazil. He is a member of several national and international professional societies, and is the author of numerous publications and reports in geography, integrated ecological research, international environmental science, and science/society relationship issues.
