Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics - GLOBEC

OCEANGlobal marine ecosystems constitute a critical component of the Earth System. The Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics –GLOBEC- Project studied how global change affects the abundance, diversity and productivity of marine populations. Co-sponsored by SCOR and IOC, GLOBEC ran for more than a decade and was an outstanding success.

GLOBEC concluded its work at the end of 2009. Some of its ongoing regional programmes are being incorporated into IMBER. IGBP and SCOR have published a Supplement to the IMBER Science Plan and Implementation Strategy to outline the topics that should be considered for incorporation into IMBER at the close of GLOBEC. The report (number 52A) can be viewed here

GLOBEC Goal

The aim of GLOBEC is to advance our understanding of the structure and functioning of the global ocean ecosystem, its major subsystems, and its response to physical forcing. This understanding will help develop the capability to forecast the responses of the marine ecosystem to global change.
