Anthropocene.info launched

News |
The first educational website about the Anthropocene has been launched. The beta version of the site, Welcome to the Anthropocence, went live during the recent Planet Under Pressure conference in London. The site, linked directly to Google Earth and containing new data visualizations, is designed to provide a dazzling overview of the colossal scale of humanity's footprint across the planet.

Welcome to the Anthropocene has had over 20,000 visitors since its launch. The accompanying three-minute film has become an online sensation with over 700,000 views since its release. The film is a rollercoaster ride through the latest chapter in the story of how one species has transformed a planet.

The idea for the website and film came from IGBP communications director Owen Gaffney, and the truly astonishing visualizations were created by Canadian anthropologist and data visualizer Felix Pharand Deuchenes and a UK film company specializing in special effects for feature films, Capture.

The website will be developed in three stages with the final site anticipated to go live in 2013.
