• A personal note on IGBP and the social sciences

Humans are an integral component of the Earth system as conceptualised by IGBP. João Morais recalls key milestones in IGBP’s engagement with the social sciences and offers some words of advice for Future Earth.
  • IGBP and Earth observation:
    a co-evolution

The iconic images of Earth beamed back by the earliest spacecraft helped to galvanise interest in our planet’s environment. The subsequent evolution and development of satellites for Earth observation has been intricately linked with that of IGBP and other global-change research programmes, write Jack Kaye and Cat Downy .

2014 Climate Adaptation Futures conference announced

News |
The 3rd Climate Adaptation Futures Conference will take place in Fortaleza, Brazil in 2014 and will be co-hosted by PROVIA and the Earth System Science Center of the National Institute for Space Studies (CCST-INPE). The conference will focus on adaptation to climate variability and change, with some emphasis on arid and semi-arid lands.
The Third International Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2014 (Adaptation Futures 2014) will be the nexus between the research community and the users of climate change adaptation information at regional and global scale.

This conference follows the successfull pioneer Climate Adaptation Futures Conference, co-hosted by Australia’s National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility and the CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship in Australia in 2010, and the Adaptation Futures 2012 International Conference on Climate Adaptation in Arizona in 2012.  Inspired by these two conferences, the Third Conference will build on the community that comes together in Fortaleza and foster a connected, collaborative and creative international network of adaptation researchers, decision makers and interested citizens.

This conference is co-hosted and convened by the Earth System Science Center of the National Institute for Space Studies (CCST-INPE) from Brazil and by UNEP’s Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA): Adaptation Futures 2014 will be held in Fortaleza, Brazil during 12-16th May 2014.  The conference will bring together researchers, policy makers, and practitioners from developed and developing countries to share insights into the challenges and opportunities that adaptation presents, and to share strategies for decision making from international to local scales.

The conference will be held at the facilities of the new Centro de Eventos do Ceará in the City of Fortaleza.
